Time to Reboot

So, I've passed the twelve week point in 2013, and done my post-mortem on the first quarter. So far, not too bad. I've managed to get into a routine for my health and feel great. I've kept my weight down and my energy up. I've kept up a social life, and my business life is moving along -- not as fast as I'd like, but that's life.

I could really use a vacation so I can concentrate on my business for a week...is that still a vacation? I don't know. But it's fun!

Anyway, I've taken this week off from training, just tossing in occasional little bursts of activity (like throwing out a set of 20 push ups) just to stay moving. What's surprising is how little muscle loss or fat gain you get in a week if your metabolism is still jacked up from the previous training sequence.

That means, of course, I'm gearing up for the next training phase. This is going to be interesting, because the new system I'll be working is a bit different from my standard workouts. That's a good thing, because I've pretty much plateaued and need a break.

It's called the "Adonis Golden Ratio," and it's by John Barban. On the surface, the program is designed to give you a specific "look" that fits within the golden ratio...I won't explain all that here. But when you examine the workouts and the eating strategy it starts to make sense from a training perspective, because it's targeted to create that look. What's important to keep in mind, though, is that the look is actually the result of the training. So when it boils down, it's still about getting the right strength to accomplish what I'm after.

All along, I've been saying that I'm not getting in shape specifically to look good, but rather to accomplish running the Tough Mudder next year. The look is a side effect of training. Even with this program, that's still my focus.

The AGR program comes with a meal plan and grocery shopping list. Overall, I'm not impressed with it simply because the shopping list suggests things like "1/6 of a grapefruit." Who buys 1/6 of a grapefruit? I understand that it's representative of compiling all the ingredients from the weekly meal plan into a weekly shopping plan, but it doesn't come out as practical in the end. Better to shop for a whole grapefruit and figure out how to use it, I think.

Even at that, the meal plan gives a very clear outline for calorie portions and some much needed structure. My worry, as it always is with meal plans, is getting enough calories. I'm supposed to be getting 2000-2500 calories a day to lose weight and fuel muscle. That to me is a LOT of food -- especially when it's healthy food that isn't especially calorie dense. But I'll do my best.

AGR runs 12 weeks. That means the weigh-in will be on Canada Day. I think that times out rather nicely...some good holiday symmetry there...and a good day to blow on some beach food!

Women We Love: Stephanie McKenzie

Working in different media has its advantages. For radio personalities, it's often a chance to be out there in the public ear, but without having to be in the public eye. Hiding behind a microphone is a great diversionary tactic (says the guy hiding behind his computer screen).

But not so for Mississauga's Stephanie McKenzie. TheHazeFM.ca's General Manager and host of Sugar and Spice, Stephanie makes a point of being visible across the media, in print, and in the social media universe, promoting her company and her brand with incredible tenacity. Plus, she's funny as hell.

Stephanie is also up for a Mississauga Arts Council People's Choice Award. So do us (and her) a favour and CLICK HERE to cast your vote! (Voting is open until April 1, 2013)

Six weeks in and still going strong

2013.

The whole point of this year for me is to get myself on track in every area of my life, and so far it's going pretty well. If there are benchmarks to progress, I'm hitting them.

For example, I hit my six-week weight loss targets. That's challenging enough, but only because my schedule (being a dad, working 40 hours a week, plus running two businesses) makes getting the workouts in a bit of a challenge. But I did it.

Read more on motivation in this week's newsletter...

I've made some interesting business contacts, some of which are turning out to be pretty exciting. There was some dabbling in the notion of a private label supplement line, but the costs of generating a supply on this side of the border are a bit out of range at the moment. However, I did just pick up the affiliate partnership with BioTRUST. So that, combined with my existing Prograde account, should provide more than enough nutritional support for my readers.

All of this goes toward the final phase of these two pieces of strategy...which I can't release details on just yet anyway. But when it comes out, you'll see exactly how all of this forms part of a bigger picture. You really should subscribe to the newsletter (over in the sidebar) to get the latest Man Sphere updates.

So, thus far at any rate, 2013 is shaping up to be a pretty spectacular year in the grand scheme of things. And that's happening both by design and by virtue of the fact that I'm actually open to the possibility of doing something a little out of the box.

Which is also why I'm signing up for another session with Soul2Sole.

Men We Admire: Vince Del Monte

by Steve Baric, The Man Sphere

If you know my story, you know that a few years ago I found myself suddenly very single, and pretty out of shape. I mean, not disgustingly so, but out of shape. I needed to get back on track, and living in a small town made it difficult to connect with the people who could make that happen. Enter the Internet, with its wealth of resources -- some good, some not so good -- on all the areas I needed help with, from style to social skills to health and fitness.

And that's where I met Vince Del Monte. Well, not met per se...more discovered. Vince has a series of videos up on YouTube that really got my attention. After I started getting results from following his video advice, I started grabbing some of his programs and following his blog. It was Vince who really first got me motivated in the direction of self-improvement and life-improvement coaching, and ultimately that lead to the publication of The Man Sphere as you see it today. So I was thrilled to finally catch up with him just before Christmas and get at a bit of his story while tapping his incredible insights into motivation and inspiration for my readers.
